Jones, Merkel go 1-2

TOWSON, Md. – Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) finished second overall and won the Division II and III section of the Baltimore Metro Meet to lead McDaniel in season-opening men's cross country action on Saturday.

The Green Terror matched Goucher with 41 points to claim a share of the Division II and III title.

Jones, who finished the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:27.85, was beat to the line only by Christian Smooth of Division I Morgan State, who finished 0.38 seconds ahead of the sophomore.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) was next across the line with a time of 17:33.14, beating Michael James of Division I Coppin State to the line by 0.27 seconds.

The next runner was nearly 13 seconds behind the front four.

Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) was the fifth overall in the D2/D3 race, finishing with a time of 18:03.03.

Keegan Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) and Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) were 16th (19:33.48) and 17th (19:44.25), respectively, in McDaniel's section.

Kyle Crouse (Keymar, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished 22nd (20:48.10) while Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooton) was 24th (21.37.22).

The Green Terror returns to action at its own home invitational on Saturday. The first race begins at 9:40 a..m.
