Ursinus rallies late to complete sweep of McDaniel
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Kait Sutherland had two hits, including the game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to give Ursinus a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Sunday.
The Bears (25-7, 10-2 CC) took game one 2-0 to hand the Green
Terror (11-16, 2-8 CC) its 10th shutout of the season,
including the fourth in the last three days. Ursinus overcame a 2-0
deficit in the nightcap to complete the sweep, 3-2.
Brittany Jarboe (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough)
recorded two of McDaniel’s eight hits in the
twinbill.
Lauren Davis pitched both ends of the doubleheader
to improve to 23-7 in the circle, fanning 20 along the
way.
After Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) drove in Samantha Staub (Mt. Airy,
Md./Linganore) and Kristina Skinner (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) – who both reached with singles
– with a double to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead in the
top of the fifth, a Jennie Moore sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the inning plated Rachel Vietheer to
slice the deficit in half.
Kristina Moore drew a leadoff walk in the bottom
of the seventh before moving to second on a sacrifice.
After a Moore single and stolen base put runners at second and
third with one out, Sutherland roped a double to center field to
clear the bases and win the game for Ursinus.
Kristen Gallagher did the work for the
Bears’ runs in the opener with a RBI double in the fourth and
a run-producing single in the sixth for the only runs of game
one.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Hood on Tuesday.
The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m.
