Ursinus racks up Ks, hits in sweep
Macedonia-Davis fans 24 in pair of complete-game wins over McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Lauren Macedonia-Davis struck out 24 batters in a pair of complete-game efforts, leading Ursinus to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Sunday.
Macedonia-Davis fanned 13 in a three-hit shutout in the opening, leading the Bears (20-2, 10-0 CC) to a 5-0 win. In game two, she lost a second consecutive shutout bid in the seventh inning of a 5-2 victory.
Kelli Jerdan rapped out five hits in the two games, part of a 30-hit attack over the twinbill.
Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) notched two of the seven hits for the Green Terror (11-17, 1-7 CC), who have now dropped its last nine game and have scored just nine runs in the last eight games of that stretch.
In game one, Macedonia-Davis struck out three of the first six batters she faced before Caitlin Higgins led off the visitor third with a single.
After a sacrifice, Amy Gentile doubled Higgins home for a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Fusco and Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) put together back-to-back hits on the Bears in which neither ball travelled past the pitching circle but Macedonia-Davis’s fifth strikeout stranded the pair at second and third.
A Jerdan single and Kelly Kalovcak double stretched the lead to 2-0 in the fifth before a Jamie Miles single, sacrifice and Kate Kehoe pinch-hit single to the gap in left-center made it 3-0 in the sixth.
A bunt single, error on the sacrifice attempt and three straight singles led to two more runs in the seventh.
Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) led off the home seventh with a single to shallow center. An error and passed ball put runners at second and third but Macedonia-Davis’s final two strikeouts and a groundout preserved the shutout.
In the nightcap, three straight singles and an error made it 2-0 before an out was recorded. An RBI groundout and bunt single stretched the lead to 4-0 at the end of the inning.
Three straight singles and a dropped liner with two outs and the bases loaded stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
Ashley Crawford (New Market, Md./Linganore) led off the home sixth with a single into center to break up the no-hitter but four more strikeouts around a pair of wild pitches kept the shutout in tact.
Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh inning before singles from Fusco and Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) loaded the bases for Tracy Davis (Christianburg, Va./Christianburg), who singled through the right side to trim the deficit to 5-2 with nobody out.
A pair of groundouts around the 24th strikeout of the day ended the threat.
The Green Terror returns to action in a doubleheader at Dickinson on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
