McDaniel splits opener at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. – Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to help McDaniel forge a doubleheader split at Mary Baldwin in season-opening softball action on Saturday.

The Squirrels (1-1) took the opener 1-0 behind a complete-game three-hit shutout from Jessica Hogle.

In the nightcap, the Green Terror (1-1) scored seven runs in the second inning en route to a shutout of its own, winning 12-0 in five innings.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first and Sara Erlichman (Bedford, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the frame, Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) led off the second with a double.

A groundout moved Elfert to third with one out before Stephanie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) drew a walk and Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) reached on an error to load the bases.

Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and Davis rapped out back-to-back singles to plate Elfert and Maring, respectively, for a 2-0 lead.

A Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) sacrifice fly allowed Fusco to score before Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) singled home Wildasin and Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) knocked in pinch-runner Jasmine McCormick (Antioch, Calif./Holy Name) for a 5-0 lead.

A second error in the frame coupled with a wild pitch stretched the lead to 7-0.

A Davis two-out solo home run in the top of the third pushed the lead to eight.

In the fifth, Laura Mertz (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Bridget McLaughlin (Langhorne, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Upper) each rapped out singles before a Davis double plated Mertz and put runners at second and third with no outs.

A Beans single knocked home McLaughlin before a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with one out.

Erlichman drew a walk to load the bases before Davis scored on a groundout and Sidney came home on a Jaclyn Liebowitz (Bellerose, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cordozo) double for the final margin.

Erlichman and Warrenfeltz, who pitched around a walk in the bottom of the fifth for a 1-2-3 frame, combined to allow just five base runners. Erlichman allowed two hits and fanned two in her debut.

Elfert and Liebowitz both had two hits in game two. Beans added a pair of RBIs.

In game one, Rebekka Conz singled with one out in the second before stealing second. Jessica Hogle followed with a single that allowed Conz to score for the game's only run.

Only one other runner reached third base for either team in the contest.

McDaniel returns to action when the squad opens its 10-game stint at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Green Terror opens on Sunday, Mar. 13 against Skidmore and St. Benedict. The Skidmore game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the St. Benedict game contest at 3 p.m.
