Halfway home

McDaniel forges split with Stevenson in pair of shutouts

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) threw a five-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead McDaniel to a doubleheader split with Stevenson in non-conference softball action on Thursday.

The Mustangs (18-17-1), behind a Julianne Roper one-hitter, took the opener 4-0 before the Green Terror (12-20) scratched out two runs in game two to earn the split, 2-0.

Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) led off the home second with a double before moving to third on a Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) infield single.

With runners at the corners, Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) pushed a bunt to the circle and beat it out for a single, allowing Wildasin to come home for a 1-0 lead.

Over the next three-and-a-half innings, the pitchers settled in and allowed just five baserunners before Warrenfeltz led off the sixth with a single through the right side.

After a foul-fly out and sacrifice bunt moved Warrenfeltz to second, Wildasin dropped a single into left field to score the junior from second.

Warrenfeltz retired the last eight Stevenson batters she faced to pick up her second win in as many days, fanning seven in the game.

In the opener, Kristin Baione led off the third with a bunt single and stole second before Brittani Rynkowski followed with a single to right field but Lauren Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) gunned Baione trying to score.

A hit batter and walk loaded the bases for Desirae Sullivan, who singled back up the middle to score Rynkowski. A misplay allowed Kuczak to score to make it a 2-0 game.

With two outs in the seventh, Sara DiMeglio singled down the left-field line and Sullivan doubled to put runners at second and third.

Jessica Bandzwolek made it back-to-back two-baggers to set the final margin.

Roper allowed just three baserunners, including a Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) double to the wall in left that broke up the no-hitter to lead off the fifth.

McDaniel returns to action at Gettysburg on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
