Reloaded and ready
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Most coaches will take their chances with a good pitching staff. After all, if a team doesn't score, it can hard to win a game.
The Green Terror had a solid staff in 2011 with the Centennial Conference's (CC) third-ranked pitching staff (3.18 ERA) but the eighth-ranked offense (.253 batting average).
However, head coach Phil Smith enters 2012 with most of that lineup intact and a revamped pitching staff, which could actually translate to a better season the diamond.
Only senior Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) spending time in the circle last season, throwing 54 2/3 innings.
Sophomore Caroline Bramble (Easton, Md./Easton), who missed last season with injury, and freshman Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) will join Warrenfeltz on a staff that will look to be among the conference's elite. Dickinson, which won the CC title last year, was the only team in the league with a staff ERA under 2.00 with a 1.89 earned-run average.
The offense and defense will have to be improved for the Green Terror after both ranked eighth in the league.
Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and Warrenfeltz led the hitters a year ago with averages of .333 and .296, respectively. Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) also returns after hitting .270.
Jaclyn Liebowitz (Bellerose, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cordozo) showed flashes of hitting prowess with a .381 average in 13 games before missing the second half of the year with injury.
Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg), who is among the smallest players on the roster, saw only 71 at bats last year but cranked a team-high five home runs while hitting .268.
