Lewis records hit, walk

SALISBURY, Md. – Virginia Wesleyan plated seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open and eliminate McDaniel from the 2015 NCAA Division III softball regional at Salisbury 11-1 on Friday.

Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) led the Green Terror (29-12), reaching base three times with a hit and walk.

Blake Henderson led the 10th-ranked Marlins (30-6) with three hits, including a double and home run.

After a leadoff walk to Courtney Bogan, she was stole second before scoring on a Kayla Malkos double off the fence in right-center field for a 1-0 lead.

A sacrifice bunt and two-out Henderson line-drive double to the gap made it a 2-0 game.

Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) dropped a single into left field to lead off the third inning before moving to second on a groundout.

After a Lewis single down the third-base line to put runners at the corners, Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) drove in Scardina, reaching on a fielding error to make it a 2-1 game.

A one-out Cassety Howerin home run just inside the left-field foul pole pushed the lead back to two in the bottom of the frame.

With two outs, Henderson singled back up the middle before Taylor Gavin drew a walk. A Liz Bailey infield single loaded the bases before a wild pitch made it a 4-1 game.

With runners at the corners, a double steal pushed the lead to 5-1. After a wild pitch on a strikeout, another double steal made it a 6-1 game.

A wild pitch on ball four scored a fifth run in the inning for the Marlins before an infield single and Malkos triple made it a 9-1 game.

Henderson tacked on a two-run home run in the fourth.

Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) fanned five in the game and ends her stellar career with 1,359 strikeouts, ranking second all-time in NCAA Division III history.
