WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel will host the 2017 Centennial Conference (CC) softball championship tournament, to be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The top-seeded Green Terror (24-15-1, 14-1-1 CC) will take on fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall (14-20, 8-8 CC) in Friday's first first-round game at 2 p.m. The double-elimination tournament's second game will be between second-seeded Washington (24-14, 13-3 CC) and third-seeded Gettysburg (24-11-1, 11-4-1 CC), slated to begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
Action will continue on Saturday with three games. The day will begin with an elimination game at 11 a.m. followed by the winners from Friday's games. Saturday's action will conclude with a second elimination game.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the championship game at 12 p.m. and 30 minutes following, if necessary.
The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on May 12. The NCAA field will be announced at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 8.
McDaniel is seeking its fifth CC championship in its 12th tournament appearance. The Green Terror has seven CC titles overall, including winning the 2012 and 2015 crowns – the last two times the tournament was held in Westminster.
McDaniel swept its regular-season meeting with Franklin & Marshall, split with Washington and won and tied with Gettysburg. The Green Terror swept the Diplomats 13-5 in six innings and 7-0 in Westminster on Mar. 25. McDaniel topped the Bullets 2-1 in 10 innings on Apr. 5. The teams played to a 2-all tie in the nightcap before the game was called due to darkness. The Green Terror defeated the Shoremen 2-1 in the opener on Apr. 8 before Washington captured the nightcap, 9-7.
Seven of the regular players in the McDaniel lineup are hitting .284 or better this season. Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) leads the team and conference with a .475 average and .573 on-base percentage, adding 21 walks to her 48 base hits. She also has 21 RBIs. Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) and Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) lead the way with 10 doubles each. Hishon also has a team-best four home runs and has driven in a team-high 26. Miller and Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) have stolen 23 and 15 bases, respectively.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) lead the pitching staff. Johnson is 10-3 with one save and a 2.08 ERA in 87 2/3 innings. Weisser is 9-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 80 2/3 innings.
