McDaniel to battle for CC title

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel will travel to Gettysburg, Pa., for the 2018 Centennial Conference (CC) softball championship tournament, to be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The second-seeded Green Terror (21-18-1, 12-4 CC) will take on third-seeded Haverford (19-11, 9-7 CC) in Friday's second first-round game, slated to begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. The double-elimination tournament's first game will be between top-seeded Gettysburg (19-13, 14-2 CC) and fourth-seeded Washington (16-20, 8-8 CC), which will begin at 2 p.m.

Action will continue on Saturday with three games. The day will begin with an elimination game at 11 a.m. followed by the winners from Friday's games. Saturday's action will conclude with a second elimination game.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with the championship game at 12 p.m. and 30 minutes following, if necessary.

The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on May 11. The NCAA field will be announced at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 7.

McDaniel is seeking its fifth CC championship in its 13th tournament appearance. The Green Terror has seven CC titles overall, including winning the 2012 and 2015 crowns in Westminster.

McDaniel swept its regular-season meetings with Haverford and Washington and was swept by Gettysburg. The Green Terror swept the Fords 12-4 in six innings and 4-2 in Westminster on Apr. 28. McDaniel topped the Shorewomen 4-3 in nine innings in Chestertown on Apr. 8 before completing the sweep with a 8-0, five-inning win. The Bullets swept the Green Terror by scores of 5-2 and 5-3 in Westminster on Apr. 5.

Six of the regular players in the McDaniel lineup are hitting .300 or better this season. Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) leads the team with a .409 average. She has eight doubles and three home runs among her 45 hits. Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) is hitting .379 with a team bests of five home runs and 34 RBIs. Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) has a .367 average with 36 hits. Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) is hitting .359 with a four home runs. Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) has a .345 average with nine doubles and three home runs among her 41 hits. She also has 26 RBIs. Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) rounds out the group of .300 hitters with a .305 average.

Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) and Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) lead the pitching staff. Rickrode is 10-2 in the circle with a 2.56 earned-run average. She has fanned 67 batters in 101 1/3 innings. Johnson is 8-7 with two saves, posting a 3.71 ERA in 94 1/3 innings.
