Snoops powers McDaniel to 66-58 victory over Juniata

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded her third career double-double , grabbing 10 rebounds to go with a career-best 18 points to help McDaniel snap its three-game skid and defeat Juniata 66-58 in non-conference women’s basketball action on Thursday.

Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) tallied her second career 20-point performance with a game-high 20 points to pace the Green Terror (2-3), who used a 21-4 stretch over a nearly 10-minute span in the second half to overcome a double-figure first-half deficit and secure the victory.
Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) tallied 11 points and six rebounds while Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) contributed 10 rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots.
Kelly Ashcraft led the Eagles (3-4) with 13 points. Jen Hnatuck chipped in a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Claudia McDowell recorded 12 points and seven assists.
After two Snoops free throws pulled the hosts within 38-37 with 13:28 to play, Ashcraft netted back-to-back baskets to stretch the lead back to five with 13:01 on the clock.
Three more Snoops charity tosses over the next three minutes trmmed the deficit to two once again and a Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) layup in traffic knotted the game at 42, tying the score for the first time since 9-all just 5:43 into the contest.
An exchange of free throws made it a 44-all contest before six Moreland points, including four of McDaniel’s eight fast-break points, keyed an 8-0 spurt over a 1-minute, 43-second span.
Ashcraft momentarily halted the momentum but a Moreland jumper and four Adams free throws stretched the lead to 58-46 with 3:18 on the clock.
After an Hnatuck layup at the other end, Adams hit layups on the next two Green Terror possessions to give her team its largest lead of the night and the squad held on for the victory.
The teams traded baskets over the game’s first nearly six minutes before Juniata used a 6-0 burst to turn a tie game into a 15-9 lead with 12:17 to play in the first half.
Holding to a six-point lead after a Moreland layup with 8:06 to play, McDowell and Brittany Ryder each hit a short jumper to push the lead to double digits for the first time at 27-17.
Two baskets and a free throw from Snoops sparked a stretch of eight consecutive points for McDaniel to close the gap to 31-29 but the Eagles tallied five of the half’s final seven points to take a 36-31 lead into the lockerroom.
Kara Smith (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) dished out five assists for McDaniel.
The Green Terror returns to action at Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
