BALTIMORE, Md. – Lyndsay Burton recorded a double-double with game highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins to a 66-44 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) matched her career high with 12 points for the Green Terror (7-15, 5-12 CC), who were officially eliminated from the conference playoff race to end the longest active run of CC playoff appearances at nine.
Alex Vassilla added a double-double of her own for the Blue Jays (18-4, 15-3 CC) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chantel Mattiola chipped in 11 points for Johns Hopkins, which can clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CC tournament with a victory on Saturday.
Burton and Mattiola combined for 12 points during a game-opening 21-2 run that staked the hosts to a 19-point advantage before the game was six and a half minutes old. The Blue Jays tallied the game's first eight points before Snoops got McDaniel on the board at the 16:26 mark.
A Thompson jumper with 13:18 to play in the first half snapped the opening run. The lead fluctuated between 15 and 19 points until a pair of Snoops baskets helped the Green Terror tally the final six points of the first to close the halftime margin to 29-18.
Five points from Mattiola helped the Blue Jays stretch the lead to 20 for the first time with 14:20 to play. A Burton layup gave her team a 48-28 lead.
A Katerine Brooks jumper pushed the lead to as large as 32 at 62-30 with 6:08 to play but the Green Terror tallied 14 of the game's final 18 points.
