Washington survives furious McDaniel rally

Shorewomen use late 14-3 run after Green Terror takes lead

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Sally O'Donnell finished with 22 points to lead Washington (Md.) to a 78-72 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown led the Green Terror (7-17, 5-13 CC) with a career-best 28 points to go with a career-high 10 assists, becoming the first player to record 10 assists in a game since Katy Powell four years ago against Washington. Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added 16 points and 10 rebounds, including hitting a pair of 3-pointers – her first triples since her freshman season.

Meghan Tait and Latisha Pledger added 17 points apiece for the Shorewomen (11-12, 9-9 CC), who used a 14-3 run to build a nine-point lead with 1:46 before watching McDaniel trim the deficit to three with the ball.

After Thompson hit a 19-footer to cap a 6-0 run and give McDaniel its first lead since the 16:50 mark of the first half, O'Donnell responded with a layup and then hit a triple to give Washington a 65-62 advantage.

Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) hit a single free throw to trim the deficit to two before Meghan Tait stretched the lead back to four with a long jumper at the 4:18 mark.

Three O'Donnell free throws and a Pledger layup on the break pushed the advantage to 74-65 before Thompson converted a pair of baskets and Snoops hit her second 3-pointer to slice the deficit to three with 40.2 seconds to play.

The Green Terror forced a steal on the next Washington possession but McDaniel could not convert and the Shorewomen went 3-for-4 from the stripe over the waning seconds.

Snoops netted McDaniel's first seven points to open the game, staking the Green Terror to a 7-6 advantage 3:10 into the game.

Washington countered with a 9-2 run, keyed by five points from Sally O'Donnell, to take a 15-9 lead and force a McDaniel timeout 2 minutes, 17 seconds later.

Nine straight Green Terror gave the visitors a 20-19 advantage on a Thompson layup with 10:49 on the clock.

Kelly Mitchell halted the 1-minute, 32-second burst with a 3-pointer from the left corner before Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y../Oneida) hit a pair of free throws to knot the game at 22-all.

O'Donnell canned a triple of her own to make it a 25-22 game before Larsen  countered with a 15-foot baseline jumper to close the deficit to one.

Six straight Shorewomen points stretched the lead to seven before a Larsen turnaround snapped the run with 6:12 showing.

Back-to-back buckets from Latesha Pledger and Claire Mattox stretched the lead to as large as nine before Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) hit a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds remaining in the first half to close the deficit to 39-32 at the intermission.

Washington stretched the lead to 10 before a 9-2 Green Terror run, including five straight points from Thompson, closed the deficit to 47-44 with 14:39 to play.

Two O'Donnell free throws pushed the lead back to five.

The Shorewomen pushed the lead to as many as six before two Thompson free throws closed the deficit to 58-56 with 8:09 to play.

Tait pushed the lead to four before jumpers from Snoops and Larsen knotted the game at 60-all with 7:15 showing.

McDaniel concludes the season at Gettysburg on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
