McMaster scores 11 in season-opening win
WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the game's first 9:09 en route to a 77-26 women's basketball victory over Mary Baldwin in the opening round of the 2013 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament on Friday.
Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) netted 11 points to lead the Green Terror (1-0), who advances to Saturday's championship game against between Wilkes, which defeated Goucher 67-56 in the night's second game. Stephanie Fish (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) added 10 points.
Lindsey Poirot and Shantelle Jennings scored six points each to lead the Fighting Squirrels (0-1), who were held to just six points after halftime.
Baskets from Allie Eader (Ijamsville, Md./Linganore), McMaster and Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) staked McDaniel to a 6-0 lead in the first 2:04 before Poirot broke up the shutout 3:26 into the game.
A McMaster fast-break jumper sparked a 15-2 run that stretched the lead to 17 en route to a 44-20 halftime advantage.
Perez closed the first half with a 3-pointer in the corner just before the halftime buzzer.
Dallas Hamlette scored the first basket of the second half to close the margin to 22 before McMaster countered with back-to-back baskets, sparking 17-0 run.
The defense held Mary Baldwin without a point for 10 minutes, 31 seconds during the second half.
Perez added eight points while Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) added eight in her debut. Perez also led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.
