WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel gradually built a 14-point first-half lead before holding off a second-half rally from Muhlenberg to notch a 52-45 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory on Wednesday.
Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) matched her career high with 17 points to lead the Green Terror (8-3, 3-2 CC), who also got 13 points from Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East).
Erin Laney led the Mules (5-6, 2-3 CC) with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Leanna Tallamy added 13 points.
After Leann Lanza staked Muhlenberg to a 2-0 lead, McMaster hit her first 3-pointer of the season with 17:57 to play for a 3-2 lead.
Back-to-back Lanza layups gave the visitors a 6-3 edge before Perez canned a triple to tie the game.
A McMaster jumper and second Perez 3-pointer extended the lead to 11-6 with 9:56 showing.
An Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) layup capped a 10-0 run before Laney hit a layup to stop an 8-minute, 32-second cold spell.
Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) quickly responded with a layup to start another 9-0 burst.
McMaster hit her second triple during the stretch.
A Tallamy layup and Nicole Pepe 3-pointer closed the deficit to 24-16 at the intermission before the Green Terror extended the lead back to 34-19 with 15:55 remaining in the second half.
Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) hit a 3-pointer with 15:04 to play to make it a 37-22 game before Muhlenberg held McDaniel to just one McMaster free throw over the next 6 minutes, 44 seconds.
A Laney three-point play closed the deficit to 38-37 with 8:42 on the clock before Perez responded with a three-point play of her 22 seconds later.
The Green Terror added 10 of the game's next 12 points to push the lead back to double digits with 3:39 on the clock.
Clinging to a 45-39 lead, Allie Eader (Ijamsville, Md./Linganore) just beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer from the win to stretch the lead to nine before McMaster hit two free throws to stretch the lead to 11.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
