WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel started the game on a 13-0 run en route to a 59-45 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror (11-10, 9-7 CC) with 17 points, including 11 in the first half.
Lindsay O'Sullivan paced the Garnet (2-18, 2-13 CC) with 14 points off the bench.
After a Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) free throw opened the scoring with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter, Burgess canned back-to-back 3-pointers 44 seconds apart to open up a 7-0 lead with 6:59 showing.
Four points from Melanie Yeomans (Adamstown, Md./South Hagerstown) and single free throws from Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) and Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic) accounted for the remainder of the opening stretch.
O'Sullivan got the visitors on the board with 4:29 remaining in the first period, sparking a 10-2 counter that made it a five-point game after one quarter.
Hayley Raymond hit a jumper on the first possession of the second quarter but McDaniel responded with the next 14 points – six of which came from Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to stretch the lead to 29-12 with 4:47 on the clock.
The lead grew as large as 18 en route to a 37-22 advantage at the break.
A Burgess 3-pointer and two March free throws in the first 3:09 of the second half pushed the lead to 20 and it never dipped below that until the Garnet netted the game's final nine points over the last 4:01.
March finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Zeps added seven rebounds and five assists.
The Green Terror returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
