Tsomos tallies career-best 12

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Muhlenberg jumped out to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter en route to a 56-46 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Renie Tsomos (Forest Hill, Md./River Hill) netted a career-best 12 points for the Green Terror (6-8, 4-5 CC), who also got a game-high 19 points from Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic College) to go with eight rebounds and five steals.

Chelsea Gary led the 12th-ranked Mules (14-1, 9-1 CC) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, pacing three players in double figures. Rachel Plotke added 13 points while Brandi Valley had 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Plotke drained a deep 3-pointer on Muhlenberg's opening possession before Gary turned a McDaniel turnover into a layup for a 5-0 lead before 46 seconds had elapsed.

A Tsomos jumper made it an 11-8 game with 3:21 to play in the opening period but a pair of Carley Hamilton jumpers started a 10-0 run to close the quarter and stretch the lead to 13.

Another Plotke triple opened up a 25-8 lead with 8:16 showing before Storer snapped a 5-minute, 39-second scoring drought with a jumper.

Another Storer jumper and Tsomos basket closed the deficit to 11 but a 7-1 close to the half by the Mules made it a 32-15 game at the break.

Muhlenberg extended the lead to 21 before a Libby Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) jumper in the final minute of the third quarter made it a 42-23 deficit.

Five points from Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) turned an 18-point deficit into a 47-31 game with 5:15 to play.

Seven points from Storer helped dwindle the Mule lead to 49-38 with 1:13 remaining.

Triples from Tsomos and Burgess in the final 30 seconds set the 10-point final margin.

Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) pulled down a team- and career-high nine rebounds to go with two points and four assists.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
