ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg shot 45 percent in a 63-53 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball win over McDaniel on Saturday.
Caroline Ward (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) led the Green Terror (12-13, 10-10 CC) with 13 points in the season finale after a Dickinson victory over Washington eliminated McDaniel from the conference tournament.
Rachel Plotke led the 25th-ranked Mules (22-3, 17-3 CC) with 22 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including 5-for-6 from long range.
After Carley Hamilton and Melanie Yeomans (Myersville, Md./South Hagerstown) traded jumpers in the first 1:07, Christina Manning hit the second of two free throws to spark a 13-2 run that gave Muhlenberg a double-digit lead.
A Yeomans layup with 8:49 to play in the second quarter cut the deficit to 16-9 but the Mules scored six straight points to go up 13 just shy of three minutes later.
Back-to-back Ward triples shrunk the lead back to seven with 4:57 showing but Muhlenberg extended the lead back as large as 14 en route to a 31-19 halftime lead.
Five straight points from Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and a two Yeomans free throws made it a 33-26 game with 7:36 to play in the third quarter but two Plotke 3-pointers keyed a 9-0 response to push the lead back to 16 and the lead was never in single digits again.
Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) added 13 points while Smith had 10 and Yeomans chipped in nine.
