Lines breaks deadlock to give Green Terror victory over 14th-ranked Catholic
WESMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) tallied unassisted with 6:44 on the clock to break an 8-all deadlock and give McDaniel a 9-8 win over No. 14 Catholic in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.
Brittany Baer (Manchester, Md./Westminster) registered three goals, including the game-tying goal 6-minutes, 22-seconds earlier, to lead the Green Terror (6-1), who knocked off its second ranked opponent this season.
Kate Narzikul matched Baer with three goals to pace the Cardinals (1-5), who fell to 0-3 against Centennial Conference competition this season.
Leanne Hollinger (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made two of her 14 saves for McDaniel after Lines’ marker and defense forced three of Catholic’s 25 turnovers in the waning minutes.
Narzikul finished a Mary Swarthout feed 18 seconds into the game to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.
Lindsay Davenport and Swarthout stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 7:37 mark before Baer broke up the shutout just over a minute later, finishing a Sarah Mintz (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) feed.
Katie Shields stretched the lead back to three at the 10:24 mark before Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) started a three-goal run to draw the Green Terror even with 12:44 to play in the first half.
Stephanie Serbun (Abington, Pa./Abington) and Alison Rose (Jessup, Md./Hammond) contributed during the stretch.
Narzikul and Christina Rogers stretched the lead to 6-4 before Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) made it a 6-5 game with 8:17 to play in the opening half.
Just 35 seconds into the second stanza, Narzikul once again made it a two-goal game but Baer and Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) tallied 1:57 apart to even the game at 7-all.
Rogers once again gave the visitors the advantage at the 39:48 mark before Baer and Lines tallied for the McDaniel win.
Emma Ardolino (Freeland, Md./Hereford) led the Green Terror defense with six ground balls while Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers.
The Green Terror opens the conference schedule at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
