Muhlenberg rallies for OT win

Mules tally twice in final minute to force overtime, down McDaniel

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Amanda McGovern tallied four goals and added two assist, including with 29 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 13-all, to lead Muhlenberg to a 14-13 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) each scored three goals to lead the Green Terror (7-5, 1-4 CC), who fell two games out of the fifth and final playoff spot with four conference games to play.

Trailing 13-10 with four minute to play in regulation, the Mules (7-4, 2-3 CC) tallied the final four goals of the contest to move to within one game of a playoff spot.

After back-to-back tallies from Watkins 3:09 apart gave the visitors a three-goal advantage with 7:29 to play, McGovern drew Muhlenberg with two with 3:32 on the clock.

A Lauren DeCarle unassisted tally with one minute showing made it a one-goal game before McGovern finished a solo run 31 seconds later to force the 6-minute extra session.

Danielle Scarrone finished a pass from McGovern 26 seconds into the period and Allisyn Vachon made two of her 18 saves over the final 5:34 of the session for the win.

Two goals from Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) gave McDaniel a 2-0 lead just 1:54 into the game before McGovern got the Mules on the board with an unassisted tally at the 4:59 mark.

Goals from Messersmith and Alison Rose (Jessup, Md./Hammond) stretched the lead to 4-1 midway through the period before all three of Danielle Rosen’s goals keyed a five-goal flurry over the final 12:34 of the half to take a 6-4 advantage into the break.

McGovern capped the 6-0 burst 26 seconds into the second half before Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Messersmith made it a one-goal game just 2:10 later.

After Alyssa Bascelli pushed the lead back to two, Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and Stephanie Serbun (Abington, Pa./Abington) evened the game at 8-all with 17:20 to play.

Tallies from Bascelli and Kelsey Elmer reestablished a two-goal edge for the Mules but Walkins sparked a five-goal burst with a free-position goal at the 46:35 mark.

Messersmith added an 8-meter goal a minute later before Brittany Baer (Manchester, Md./Westminster) tallied her 38th goal of the season and the 177th of her collegiate career with 11:53 to play to give her team a one-goal edge and leave the senior one goal shy of tying Sandi Steven’s all-time goal scoring record.
