Dickinson helps playoff cause
Red Devils defeat McDaniel 11-8 to severely damage Green Terror playoff hopes
CARLISLE, Pa. – Kaity Moore netted six goals to lead Dickinson to an 11-8 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
In a game with crucial conference tournament implications, the Red Devils (7-5, 4-4 CC) and Green Terror (9-6, 3-5 CC) went back and forth for virtually the entire 60 minutes with the winner poised to claim the final playoff spot and the loser virtually eliminated.
Brittany Baer (Manchester, Md./Westminster) recorded three goals for McDaniel while Dickinson's Lucy West was the only other player with multiple goals, finding the back of the net twice.
Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) staked the Green Terror to a 1-0 lead, finishing a Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) feed just 26 seconds into the game.
Moore responded with a free-position goal just over three minutes later to even the game at 1-all.
Kelsey Muir finished a solo run to give the Red Devils a 2-1 advantage with 19:45 to play in the first half but Stephanie Serbun (Abington, Pa./Abington) countered 7 minutes, 21 seconds later for the second tie of the game.
Moore and Scheler exchanged tallies for the third tie with 3:02 showing but West converted a free-position goal with 12 seconds on the clock for a 4-3 halftime advantage.
Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) evened the game at 4-all just 37 seconds into the second half.
West needed just 11 seconds to respond but Baer countered 1:05 later on a free-position goal for the fifth tie.
A Moore free-position tally 16 seconds later gave the hosts the lead for good before Sunny Ko capped a five-goal flurry in the first 2:59 of the second half for a two-goal advantage.
Baer finished a feed from Sarah Mintz (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 25:22 to play but Moore and Alysa Crellin tallied 14 seconds apart to push the lead to 9-6 four minutes later.
Baer and Moore exchanged tallies 58 seconds apart and Lisa Jurd (Colombia, Md./Hammond) made it a 10-8 game with 13:07 to play but Moore capped her six-goal day with an unassisted tally in the 58th minute to set the final margin.
With one date remaining on the conference schedule, the Red Devils would need just a victory in its finale at Swarthmore to secure the final spot. However, Dickinson also holds the advantage in tiebreakers with head-to-head victories over McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Washington.
The Green Terror concludes the regular season at Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
