Messiah uses 12-3 first half to key 16-6 victory over McDaniel

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Rachel Dirksen netted five goals to lead Messiah to a 16-6 victory over McDaniel in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Megan Bovenzi and Maddie Comfort each added hat tricks for the Falcons (2-0), who built a 14-3 lead before three minutes had elapsed in the second half.

Six different players each scored a goal for the Green Terror (0-1), who were outshot 27-17 in the contest.

Comfort converted a free-position attempt just 52 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 Messiah advantage.

Four consecutive unassisted markers by four different Falcons stretched the lead to 5-0 just 4:54 into the game.

One minute later, Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) put home a free-position goal to dent into the advantage.

Two minutes later, Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) finished a solo run and Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) put in a second free-position goal to trim the deficit to 5-3 with 18:30 to play in the first half.

Just 27 seconds later, however, Dirksen finished a Gabrielle Hamerlyck feed to start a nine-goal flurry in which Dirksen contributed four of her five tallies.

Comfort scored in the final 11 seconds of the first half to make it a 12-3 game at the break before Bovenzi and Comfort stretched the lead to 11 just 2:23 into the second half.

Goals from Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hanmmond) nearly eight minutes apart closed the margin to 14-5 before Kiersten McGreen once again made it a 10-goal game with 9:13 to play.
