Swarthmore uses overtime to defeat McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Annalise Penikis netted five goals and added a pair of assists to lead Swarthmore to an 11-9 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Tuesday.
Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) led the Green Terror (1-7, 1-3 CC) with her third straight three-goal game.
Corinne Sommi and Emily Evans rounded out the scoring for the Garnet (6-2, 2-1 CC), contributing a pair of hat tricks.
Trailing 9-7, Swarthmore tallied the final four goals of the game, including twice in the final 10:04 to force overtime.
After Jurd had scored a pair of goals 52 seconds apart to break a 7-all deadlock, Evans responded with back-to-back markers of her own.
She finished a solo run with 10:04 showing before finishing a pass from Penikis with 7:11 on the clock to knot the game.
McDaniel had a chance at the end of regulation and was set up for a free-position shot in the final second but Jurd's attempt crossed the line after the horn sounded, sending the team's to a six-minute extra session.
Sommi gave the visitors the edge in overtime, tallying 1:13 into the session.
The Garnet won the ensuing draw control and was able to essentially run out the clock in the first half of the first overtime.
The Green Terror won the draw control to start the second half of overtime but was unable to convert before Swarthmore gained possession and Penikis found the back of the net just before the final horn off Sommi's second assist of the night.
Penikis converted a free-position shot with 24:13 to play in the first half to stake the visitors to an early 1-0 lead.
Mary Tokolish (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) recorded both of her assists in a 54-second span, finding Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) with 19:23 on the clock and Chelsea Wakins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) with 18:29 showing.
Penikis knotted the game three minutes later before a pair of Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) goals 2:19 apart gave the hosts a 4-2 edge with 12:32 to play in the opening stanza.
Jurd stretched the lead to 5-2 with 9:29 remaining before Sommi and Evans countered 34 seconds apart to close the deficit to one with 6:15 on the clock.
Messersmith made it a two-goal first half with a free-position goal at the 5:01 mark before Tokolish converted off a Lines' pass on a restart nearly two minutes later for a 7-4 halftime advantage.
A Sommi free-position tally 40 seconds into the second half and two Penikis goals knotted the game before 6:41 had elapsed in the second half.
Messersmith added five draw controls while Steph Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) had five ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
