McDaniel rallies to defeat Ursinus in overtime

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) forced overtime then won it late in the first extra period, sending McDaniel to an 8-7 victory over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Messersmith capped her three-goal day with the fifth and sixth free-position goals for the Green Terror (2-12, 2-7 CC) on the day, snapping a nine-game skid in the process.

Allison Furman led the Bears (6-8, 4-3 CC) with a hat trick of her own while contributing two assists.

Trailing 7-5, Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) found the back of the net on a free-position shot for her second of the game with 4:34 to play in regulation.

Just over two minutes later, Messersmith hit the back of the net to even the game for the fourth time.

McDaniel had one shop midway through the first half of the six-minute extra session before Messersmith was awarded the team's 11th free-position attempt of the game in the final 40 seconds of the first overtime.

The junior fired into the back of the net with 35.4 seconds showing before Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) controlled the ensuing draw for the Green Terror and the hosts were able to run out the clock.

Jurd staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead with a free-position tally just 2:07 into the game.

Danielle DeColli (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) doubled the advantage with a second 8-meter goal just 57 seconds later.

Back-to-back tallies from Furman knotted the game before Emily Diehl hit a free-position goal of her own with 17:51 on the clock to put the Bears on top.

A Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) hit from short range in front of the net to even the game with 10:49 showing.

Elizabeth Chatburn finished a feed from Furman for a 4-3 edge at the break.

Diehl stretched the lead to two just 55 seconds into the second half.

A second DeColli free-position goal and Messersmith unassisted marker evened the game at 5-all with 12:24 to play.

Furman needed just 21 seconds to put Ursinus back on top and then found Urban for a two-goal lead with 9:03 on the clock.

Messersmith added four draw controls for McDaniel.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against No. 16 Elizabethtown on Tuesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
