Glotfelty wins at heavyweight to lead McDaniel to third-place showing at Messiah Invitational
GRANTHAM, Pa. – Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) went 4-0 with a pair of pins to win at heavyweight and key McDaniel’s third-place finish at the Messiah Invitational in wrestling action on Saturday.
The Green Terror posted 62.5 points to finish 11.5 points behind team champion Messiah. Elizabethtown was second with 80 points.
Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) and Will Yeo (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) finished second in their respective weight classes while Ryan Deiter (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) placed third.
Glotfelty, the top seed at heavyweight, opened his title run with a 2-minute, 11-second fall of Ursinus’ Fernando Jones before taking down Gwo Shih (UMBC) in 2:05. In the semifinals, he defeated Waynesburg’s Corbin Semple 10-3 before winning by decision in the championship bout 4-0 over Tim Katzaman of Elizabethtown.
Yeo earned a bye in the first round of the 197-pound bracket before defeating Ed Minelli (Ursinus) 8-5 to earn a spot in the championship bout, where he was defeated by Johns Hopkins’ Tyler Schmidt, 7-0.
Lowe, the fourth seed at 149, opened his day with a 19-2 technical fall over Robbie Nedbor-Gross (Johns Hopkins) at the end of the second period. Lowe added an 18-4 major decision over Garett Johnston of Waynesburg before pinning Messiah’s Logan Putnam in 2:57. In the title bout, Lowe was pinned by third-seeded Mike Bressler (Messiah) in 1:08.
At 184, Deiter fell to Messiah’s Matt McHugh 17-1 before wrestling his way all the way to a third-place finish, capping that run with three straight pins.
After a 7-0 win over Aaron Leeking (Waynesburg), Deiter pinned Nate Delsem (Messiah) and McHugh in the first period and downed Johns Hopkins’ Hector Cintron at the 2:39 mark of the match.
McDaniel returns to action at the Ursinus Fall Brawl on Nov. 16. Action begins at 10 a.m.
