McDaniel places fifth as team at CC Championships
HOBOKON, N.J. - Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) put together three straight victories to repeat as heavyweight champion and lead McDaniel to a fifth-place finish at the 2010 Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling championships hosted by Stevens on Saturday.
The Green Terror recorded 48 points to finish fifth at the eight-team championship. Merchant Marine took its third straight crown with 88 points. Ursinus finished second with 78 points while Stevens (70) and Johns Hopkins (52) rounded out the top five.
Entering the day as the top seed and reigning champion, Glotfelty was awarded a medical forfeit in his opening match of the day.
In the semifinals, the junior notched his 16th pin of the season with a 6-minute, 37-second fall of Ursinus' Ed Minelli.
In a rematch of last year's final, Glotfelty once again defeated Merchant Marine's Jud Connell - by a 6-3 margin this year after winning 5-4 last year.
By virtue of his championship, Glotfelty once again earns a spot in the NCAA Division III championships, held Mar. 5-6 at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Glotfelty finished eighth at the 2009 championships.
Earl Eppard (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne), Tommy Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) joined Glotfelty as medalists on Saturday.
Eppard (125) - the No. 2 seed - earned a bye into the semifinals, where he defeated Washington and Lee's Ben Ersing 8-1 before falling 3-2 to Merchant Marine's Jordan Alfaro, the top seed, in the finals.
Goretsas (133) entered the day as the top seed and earned a bye into the semifinals. He advanced to the championship bout with a 4-1 win over Stevens' Kyle Bresson before falling 3-2 to Johns Hopkins Paul Marcello.
Lowe (149), the No. 2 seed, opened his outing with a 5-minute, 30-second fall of Washington and Lee's Justin Welch before falling 12-6 to Merchant Marine's Martin Bell in the semifinals.
Lowe recorded a 21-4 technical fall in the second period to advance to the third-place match, where he notched an 11-9 win in the first sudden-victory period over Ben Kaufman (Johns Hopkins).
