GRANTHAM, Pa. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic), ranked third at 133, went 4-0 to remain undefeated at Messiah this season, winning the title at the annual Petrofes Invitational in wrestling action on Friday and Saturday.
Behind eight placewinners, the Green Terror finished sixth as a team with 104.5 points. Messiah won the nine-team tournament with 183 points.
O'Boyle opened his day with a 1-minute, 34-second fall of Kenny Hayes (Ursinus) before recording back-to-back major decisions. He downed Mount Union's Nathan Kirk 17-4 and Wilkes' Cory Fleming 14-6 in the semifinals. In the title bout, O'Boyle earned a 2-1 win over Mount Union's Jeremy Border.
Logan Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) went 3-1 to finish second at 165. After opening with a bye, Yox toppled Tyler Miller (Messiah) by fall in 1:58 before recording decisions, 4-2 and 6-4, to advance to the championship match. In the title bout, Yox had to injury default 32 seconds into the match, giving Stephen Cannon (Messiah) the crown.
Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) added a third-place showing at heavyweight. After winning his opening match 3-2, Avino was pinned in the first period by runner-up William Fletcher (Wilkes) to drop the consolation bracket. Avino wrestled his way back to a third-place finish. He defeated Luke Weaver (Messiah) by major decision 15-4 before notching a pair of injury default wins. In the consolation finals, he defeated Matan Peteg (Ursinus), 6-4.
Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) and Mike O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) competed at 141 on a crash-course for the fifth-place bout, which ended with Drummond taking a medical forfeit to place fifth while O'Boyle was sixth.
Drummond had a bye to open the tournament before recording a 4-minute, 58-second fall of Casey Shea (Bridgewater). He dropped a 4-1 decision to fall to the consolation bracket, where he defeated Jacob Younger (Messiah) 16-11 and pinned Alex Funderburg (Mount Union) in 4:01. He dropped a 6-2 decision to Alex Kramer (Ursinus) to fall to the fifth-place match.
O'Boyle opened with back-to-back pins, winning in 1:30 and 5:23 before advancing to the semifinals with a 7-5 victory over Pankil Chander (Wilkes). He fell to Bryant Roby (Mount Union) – the same wrestler who defeated Drummond a round earlier – by a 9-6 margin. O'Boyle was pinned 10 seconds into the second period to move into the fifth-place bout.
Cross had a 6-minute, 44-second pin in his first match of the day before falling 14-9 in the semifinals and dropping a pair of major decisions in the consolation bracket.
Wilhelm dropped his opening match by fall in 4:24 before recording wins of 3-0 and 7-2 around a 1-minute, 38-second fall of Springfield's Devin Hurst. Wilhelm was pinned in the consolation semifinals and the fifth-place match to place sixth.
Mason Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) rounded out the placewinners, finishing seventh at 149. Goretsas started his weekend with a 14-1 win over Muhlenberg's Chayoot Chengsupanimit and then defeated Eric Bergeron (Bridgewater), 9-3. Goretsas dropped the consolation bracket after falling 4-1 to runner-up Eli Gaylor (Ursinus). In the consolation bracket, Goretas defeated his teammate Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) by fall in 4:44 before being pinned by Zach Joseph (Springfield). Goretsas topped Brendan Morgan (Springfield) 6-1 in the seventh-place match.
Mitchell went 2-2 at 149, recording a pair of major-decision wins (14-3 and 11-2) in the consolation bracket before falling to his teammate.
The Green Terror returns to action at the University of Chicago Duals on Saturday, Jan. 4. Action begins at 10 a.m.
