Cross wins twice

CHICAGO, Ill. – Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Annes County) won twice to lead McDaniel at the University of Chicago Duals in non-conference wrestling action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (4-3) dropped its three matches on the day, falling to No. 18 St. John's (Minn.) 52-0 before dropping a 29-21 decision to the host Maroons. In the final match against Trine, the two teams split the 10 bouts but the Thunder was awarded the victory 22-21 on total match points tiebreaking criteria.

The Johnnies (6-6) won all 10 matches, including taking a 12-0 lead after earning forfeits at 125 and 133. Joseph Hessing (149) and Theodore Erikson (174) had the biggest victories. Hessing won by fall in 1:07 while Erikson recorded the pin in 1 minute, 17 seconds.

Against the Maroons (3-8), Chicago jumped out to a 16-0 lead before Mason Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) recorded a 4-2 overtime decision to get McDaniel's first win of the day.

Three more Maroon wins, including a Steven Franke 1-minute, 24-second fall at 174, stretched the lead to 29-4 before the final three Green Terror wrestlers each recorded pins.

Cross won in 2:08 at 184 before Dakota Wilhelm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) won by fall in 2:43 at 197.

Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) rounded out the match with a pin in the final 19 seconds.

The Thunder (1-2) were staked to a 12-0 lead with forfeit wins at 125 and 133 before McDaniel won four straight bouts to take a 18-12 advantage.

Mike O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) won 8-7 at 141 before Goretsas recorded a 4-minute, 18-second pin to draw the Green Terror within 12-9.

Erik Meyer (Fallston, Md./Archbishop Curley) was awarded a forfeit at 157 to turn the three-point deficit into a three-point lead before Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) extended the lead to six with a 4-0 win at 165.

Shane Henderson took an 8-2 win at 174 before Cross won 4-1 at 184 to keep it a six-point match.

Michael Conner drew Trine within three with a 5-2 win at 197 before Mackenzie Green needed two overtimes but prevailed 5-1 to force a tie score. The match went to the third criteria before the Thunder was awarded the match win.

The Green Terror returns to action at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus on Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
