O’Boyle nabs crown at 133

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) went 3-0 with three pins to win the 133-pound weight class and lead McDaniel to a fifth-place finish at the 2014 Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling championship hosted by Ursinus on Saturday.

O'Boyle led a contingent of seven placewinners for the Green Terror, who finished with 48 points. Ursinus won the team title with 102.5 points to nearly double-up second-place Stevens, which finished with 65 points.

O'Boyle, the top seed, downed Merchant Marine's Isaac Hammond in the first round midway through the final period before topping Sean Billings (NYU) late in the first period to advance to the title tilt. In the championship bout, O'Boyle made it 3-for-3 with falls, downing second-seeded Ray Yagloski (Johns Hopkins) in 2:25.

The seeds held true at 141, where Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) finished third. Drummond topped sixth-seeded Nick Matthews (NYU) 9-5 in the opening round before falling to the consolation bracket after dropping a 7-2 decision to second-seeded Eli Gaylor (Ursinus). In the consolation bracket, Drummond recorded an 8-2 win over Nathan Twito (Merchant Marine) and a 7-3 win over Gettysburg's Matt Spano in the third-place match.

Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) made it a second third-place finish after the seeds also held at 165. Yox opened with a 4-2 win over Washington and Lee's Mac Evarts before falling to second-seeded Connor Bass (Stevens) 4-1 in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Yox topped Buddy Watson (Merchant Marine) 5-4 and bettered Tyler Cunningham (Gettysburg) 7-5 in the third-place match.

Mason Goretsas (Hamspstead, Md./North Carroll), Erik Meyer (Fallston, Md./Archbishop Curley), Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Annes County) and Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) each finished fourth in their respective weight classes.

Goretsas, the fourth seed at 149, opened with a 5-1 win over Jack Walsh (Merchant Marine) before being pinned by top seed Mike Polizzi (Stevens). In the consolation bracket, Goretsas took a 13-4 major decision before falling 4-2 in the third-place bout.

Meyer, unseeded at 157, dropped a 4-1 decision to open the day before notching wins of 7-1 and 2-1 to reach the third place match, where he fell to Ben Stallings (Merchant Marine) – the same person who defeated him to open the day – by a 3-0 margin.

Cross, the sixth seed at 184, opened his day with a 4-2 win over third-seeded Kyle Spangler (Johns Hopkins) before falling 18-6 to second-seeded Daniel Manganaro (Ursinus). In the consolation bracket, Cross notched a 6-3 win before falling 6-5 in the third-place bout.

Avino, the fourth seed at heavyweight, opened with a 2-minute, 29-second pin before dropping to the consolation bracket with a 5-2 loss to top-seeded and eventual champion Chris Florek (Stevens). Avino added a fall in 3:46 before falling 3-2 in the third-place match.

Dakota Wilhelm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) went 1-2 on the day at 197, notching a 9-3 victory in the consolation bracket.

The Green Terror returns to action at the NCAA Division III East Regional at King's on Sunday, Mar. 2. Action begins at 10 a.m.
