O’Boyle punches ticket to nationals

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A year after finishing second at the regional tournament, sophomore Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) will be making a return trip to the NCAA Division III wrestling championship after claiming his first NCAA Div. III East Regional championship on Sunday.

Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) added a fourth-place finish for the Green Terror, who finished 12th at the 17-team regional hosted by King's with 36 points. Wilkes edged Ursinus 106.5-105.5 for the team title.

O'Boyle will compete at the national championship on Mar. 14-15 at US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

O'Boyle opened his day as the top seed at 133 with a bye before notching three straight decisions en route to the program's first-ever regional champion. O'Boyle topped Stevens' Ryan Wilson 6-4 before downing Delaware Valley's Conor Kirkegard 4-2 in the semis to ensure a return trip to the big show.

In the championship bout, O'Boyle topped second-seeded Myzar Mendoza 12-5 to improve to 28-1.

Drummond, the fifth seed at 141, won his first match by technical fall 17-5 before recording an 18-6 major decision over David Davison (Delaware Valley) to advance to the semifinals, where he fell to the consolation bracket with a 9-3 loss to top-seed and eventual champion Brandon Jones (NYU).

Drummond advanced to the third-place match with a 4-minute, 14-second fall before falling 4-2 in sudden victory to Ferrum's Logan Meister and just miss out on joining O'Boyle in Iowa.

Mason Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven), both the eighth seed in their respective weight classes, went 2-2 for McDaniel.

Goretsas opened his day with a 2-1 win over Jack Walsh (Merchant Marine) at 149 before falling 4-0 to top seed and eventual champion Mark Hartenstine (Wilkes). In the consolation bracket, he won 2-0 before falling by technical fall, 16-1

Avino was pinned in the first period of his first match at heavyweight before winning two straight in the consolation bracket. He topped Grant Cokely (Washington and Lee) 6-1 and pinned second-seeded Eric Calimano in 6:50. Avino's day ended with a third-period pin by third-seeded William Fletcher (Wilkes).
