Lagana takes Regional Coach of the Year award

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – McDaniel women's soccer coach Sandy Lagana received her Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) at the annual convention on Jan. 17.

Lagana completed her second season at the helm, guiding the Green Terror to its first Centennial Conference (CC) playoff appearance in program history. The CC Coach of the Year also led the team into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South tournament.

In the two years since her arrival in Westminster, McDaniel has improved from a 3-11 mark in 2011 to a 7-10-1 record in her first season. In her second season, the Green Terror went 13-6-1 (6-4 CC) for the program's first winning season since 2004 and the most wins in a season since 2003.

The offense has improved significantly under Lagana's style, finishing the 2013 in the top two in the conference and top 100 nationally in goals, assists and points. McDaniel finished the season with 43 goals, more than doubling its 2012 offensive output. It was the most goals by a Green Terror team in a decade.

To qualify for consideration, a coach must be an individual NSCAA member as well as have a successful record for that season. In addition, the coach should exhibit knowledge of the game, rapport with the team, other coaches, officials and media, strong team image and conduct on the field, outside and community involvement and service to the NSCAA.
