During the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, five Green Terror athletes brought home medals, led by a gold medal indoor.
Carlos Hernandez bettered his previous personal best by more than five inches to win the shot put at the 2013 Centennial Conference men's indoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Feb. 23.
Hernandez unfurled a throw of 14.31 meters (46-11 ½) in his fifth of sixth throws to claim the program's first gold in the event since 2002. He finished his career ranked third all-time in program history and the throw was the program's fifth-best performance ever.
Jasmine McCormick finished third in the pentathlon to earn the event's initial bronze medal at the 2013 Centennial Conference women's indoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Feb. 22-23.
McCormick finished the pentathlon with 2,766 points – eight points better than her previous-best performance at Navy earlier in the month. Her top individual performance came in the opening 60-meter hurdles, finishing second with a program-record time of 9.71 seconds. She was also second in the 800 with a time of 2:32.71 and third in the shot put with a toss of 9.52 meters. Her hurdle performance earned her the most events of any single event with 767. She earned 659 in the 800.
After four years of trying, Katie Corson finally accomplished a well-stated collegiate track goal – breaking the 60-second barrier in a McDaniel uniform.
Seeded sixth in the finals of the 400 at the 2013 Centennial Conference women's outdoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus, Corson would need to knock a quarter second off her already collegiate-best 1:00.25 from the prelims on Saturday, May 4. She did that and more, taking down the program record by 1.17 seconds and earning a silver medal with her time of 58.57 seconds. The previous mark had stood for 15 years (Kerry Wilson at the CC championship meet).
Gary Smith won two of the 10 events that comprise the decathlon en route to silver medal in the event at the 2013 Centennial Conference men's outdoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4.
Smith finished the decathlon with a personal-best score of 5,403 to move into third place on the program's all-time list. He finished first in back-to-back events to finish day one, clearing 1.76 meters in the high jump and taking the 400 in a time of 52.14. The 400 time earned him 719 points. He was also second in the pole vault (3.44 meters, 467 points) and third in the 100 (11.80 seconds, 691 points).
Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) added a second McDaniel medal at the 2013 Centennial Conference men's outdoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Sunday, May 5.
Williams finished third in the finals of the 100. On Saturday, he ran a time of 11.38 seconds to enter Sunday's finals seeded fifth. He improved both his time and place to earn the bronze medal with a time of 11.26.
