Muhlenberg opens CC slate with sweep of McDaniel
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg took a pair of close decisions to open the match, propelling the hosts to a 3-0 win over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball opener for both teams on Friday.
Annie McShea (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the way for the Green Terror (0-8, 0-1 CC) with a team bests of 13 assists, nine digs, two aces and two blocks while contributing three kills.
Holly Hynson led the attack for the Mules (3-8, 1-0 CC) with 11 kills while Alyssa Schell steadied the defense with 16 digs.
In the first set, five Muhlenberg errors and kills by three different McDaniel players to go with a McShea ace helped the Green Terror jump out to a 10-4 advantage and force a Mule timeout.
McShea's second aces made it a 13-8 lead before Schell capped a 6-1 burst that knotted the set at 14-all.
Tied at 17-all, Hynson put down three balls to key a 25-22 victory for the hosts.
In set No. 2, the first 37 points featured 12 ties and five lead changes with neither team opening up an advantage of more than three points before Hynson broke an 18-all deadlock with a kill that sparked a 6-0 burst for a 23-18 lead.
The Green Terror closed to within 24-22 on a pair of Brooke Sillaman (Crofton, Md./Arundel) aces before Muhlenberg wrapped up the 25-22 win.
The Mules carried that final-point momentum to a 7-1 lead in the third set, forcing a McDaniel timeout.
Maintaining a 12-7 advantage, Muhlenberg added three straight points to stretch the lead to 15-7 en route to a 25-11 win.
Sillaman added seven digs and two assists to her two aces. Hannah Krobock (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) chipped in nine digs and three kills.
