Martin, McShea record double-doubles
WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel recorded the final six points of the match to take a 3-2 non-conference volleyball victory over Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday.
Kloe Martin (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) recorded her third straight double-double, leading the Green Terror (3-1) with 17 kills and 19 digs. Annie McShea (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) added 15 kills and 15 digs.
Olivia Kunc (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) steadied the defense with 21 digs while Colette Kellen (Derwood, Md./Covenant Life) and Melissa Weldon (Broomall, Pa./Country Day School of the Sacred Heart) rounded out a quintet of double-digit digs with 10 each. Kellen added 36 assists and two aces to the offense. Martin added three aces while Weldon had two.
Sara Ritchie led the Royals (1-4) with 21 kills and 16 digs. Katie Miller steadied the defense with 32 digs while Julyanna Anderson chipped in eight aces and 13 digs.
Eastern Mennonite took the opening set 25-21 before McDaniel returned the favor with identical scores in the second and third set to take a 2-1 lead. The Royals forced the deciding set with a 25-18 win in the fourth set before the Green Terror prevailed, 15-9.
Tied at 9-all on a Michelle Miller kill, Martin responded with a kill of her own and then took the serve.
A pair of Royal errors gave the hosts a 12-9 lead before Martin knocked down an ace to stretch the lead to four and force a timeout.
A ball-handling error brought McDaniel to match point, where Weldon knocked down her third kill of the night for the winner and the team's first 3-1 start since 2007.
Three Ritchie kills keyed a 7-0 Eastern Mennonite run that turned an 14-10 first-set deficit into a 17-14 lead en route to the four-point win.
A pair of early aces by Ritchie staked the Royals to 9-4 lead in the second set.
Still trailing 19-13, a Martin kill sparked an 8-0 rally that put McDaniel on top, 21-19. Weldon had ttwo of her aces during the stretch.
A Bryanna Smith (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) ace ended it.
Martin served the Green Terror to a 5-0 lead to open the third set before Eastern Mennonite clawed back into the set.
Tied at 19-all, Martin and Kellen put down back-to-back kills to give the hosts a two-point lead en route to the four-point win.
Three straight Anderson aces turned a 7-6 deficit into a 9-7 lead and sparked a rally, lifting the Royals to a fourth-set win.
Hannah Krobocl (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) added five total blocks while McShea had three and Martin added two.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Bradeis Tournament on Friday and Saturday. McDaniel takes on Emmanuel on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by Babson at 7 p.m.
