WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel swept Goucher before needing a fifth set for a 3-2 win over Alvernia in non-conference volleyball action on Saturday.
Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) led the Green Terror (7-1) on the day with a combined 54 digs and seven aces. She also chipped in eight assists.
In the opening match against the Gophers (0-6), Bauman recorded 26 digs and five aces.
Two of Bauman's aces came in a 9-2 start to the match. Two more aces from the junior and Teryn Rath (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) kills on each side closed out the 25-10 first-set win.
Two Isabel Paci (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) aces helped McDaniel open up a 7-1 lead in the second set. Goucher rallied to make it close but kills by Paci and Lauren Wells (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) closed out the 25-22 win.
The Green Terror jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set before coasting to a 25-18 victory.
Greta Coss led Goucher with nine kills and 12 digs.
Paci led the McDaniel attack with six kills while Wells added 10 assists. Paci also chipped in nine digs, two aces and two blocks.
Against the Golden Wolves (5-2), Bauman notched 28 digs, two aces and six assists. Marlowe Embry (Milpitas, Calif./J.H. Pitman) contributed another double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs to go with three aces. Kendall Hanak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) added 17 digs and two aces.
Kristen Sipling led Alvernia with 23 kills and 28 digs.
In the opening set, McDaniel found itself in a 17-11 hole and still trailed 23-19 before back-to-back erors and a pair of Bauman aces around an Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) kills before Embry ended the set with a kill for the 25-23 win.
Clinging to a 12-11 edge in the second set, the Green Terror reeled off nine straight points to open up a 21-11 advantage.
The Golden Wolves closed to within 24-22 but an Embry kill once again ended the set.
Alvernia led throughout most of the third set for a 25-21 victory before the fourth set went back-and-fourth with 11 ties and eight lead changes. Tied at 22-all, an Olivia Frutiger ace keyed three straight points for a 25-22 win, forcing the deciding set.
The Green Terror raced out to a 7-1 start to the final set before staving off a late rally to win, 15-12.
McDaniel returns to action at Gallaudet on Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
