Embry tallies 11 kills, 22 digs in victory

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel dropped the first set before winning three straight to defeat Swarthmore 3-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Saturday.

Marlowe Embry (Milpitas, Calif./J.H. Pitman) led the Green Terror (11-1, 2-0 CC) to its 10th straight win with 11 kills and 22 digs.

Sarah Wallace paced the Garnet (6-5, 2-1 CC) with a double-double of her own, posting 14 kills and 15 digs.

Swarthmore took the first set 25-17 before McDaniel evened the score with a 25-21 victory. The Green Terror then took the third set 25-23 before capturing the victory with a 25-18 win.

The Garnet jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set before a Sarah Girard ace and never trailed.

In the second set, Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) started a 9-1 win with a kill that put the hosts on top 14-8 en route to the four-point win.

The third set featured 12 ties and four lead changes. Tied at 22-all, an Emma Lorenzen (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) kill and ace gave McDaniel set point and forced a timeout.

Olivia Leventhal knocked down a kill out of the timeout but Lauren Wells (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) capped the victory with a kill.

After the teams traded points to open the fourth set, a Wells kills put the Green Terror in front for good, 3-2. Three straight blocks – a pair each by Lugar and Hayley Mills (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) – stretched the lead to 6-2 en route to the seven-point win.

Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) led the McDaniel defense with 30 digs while Kendall Hanak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) added 11 digs. Wells chipped in six kills and 18 assists while Gayle Edelstein (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) added 14 assists and six digs. Lugar and Mills had eight and seven kills, respectively. Mills added five blocks while Lugar had four.

The Green Terror returns to action at Catholic on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
