SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna won the final three sets to defeat McDaniel 3-2 in non-conference volleyball action on Wednesday.
Emma Lorenzen (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) led the Green Terror (15-6) with 11 kills and two total blocks, hitting a team-best .370 on the night.
Sydney Portale led three players with double-figure kills for the River Hawks (16-8) with 24 kills. Morgan Lowe added 19 kills and 22 digs.
McDaniel took the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-17, respectively, before Susquehanna forced a fifth set with wins of 25-17 and 25-19, respectively. The River Hawks took the final set, 15-8.
Keyed by three kills from Lowe, the hosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the deciding set. Hayley Mills (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) and Isabel Paci (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) strung together three straight kills to close to within 4-3 but another three straight River Hawk knockdowns stretch the lead back to 7-3 and McDaniel would get no closer.
A Kennedy Barlond (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) ace helped the Green Terror open a 6-3 lead early in the first set before the visitors methodically extended the lead. Clinging to a 22-18 lead, Lugar, Lorenzen and Marlowe Embry (Milpitas, Calif./J.H. Pitman) wrapped up the set with three straight kills.
McDaniel jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set. Susquehanna closed to within 19-14 but back-to-back Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) aces thwarted the rally and propelled the Green Terror to the eight-point win.
The River Hawks took the first three points of the third set before the teams traded points over the remainder of the set. Two straight Caroline Beohm aces stretched the lead to 22-15, helping to secure the victory.
The fourth set featured seven ties and two lead changes. After Susquehanna built a 4-0 lead, Mills – with a block and kill – capped a 9-4 counter that put McDaniel in front by one. Tied at 14-all, Lowe knocked down a kill to give the hosts the lead for good.
Embry posted 14 kills for the Green Terror while Gayle Edelstein (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) contributed 29 assists to the attack. Mills had nine kills and four blocks. Bauman steadied the defense with 21 digs to go with three aces. Embry added 19 digs while Edelstein had 14. Kendall Hanak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) chipped in 17 digs.
