WESTMINSTER, Md. – With rosters as big as at any point in recent memory, the McDaniel cross country teams have something they haven't had in recent years – extreme depth.
With that depth comes renewed optimism for strong showings not only at the Centennial Conference Championships on Oct. 29 but also the NCAA Division III Mideast regional meet two weeks later.
The weeks leading up to those final two meets will be preparation and sorting out who among the more than 20 men and nearly 20 women will make up the Green Terror's top seven.
On the men's side, Jake Zamostny (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) is posed to lead the way while Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) returns to the lineup. A host of freshman will likely be the contenders for the remaining top spots.
For the women, McDaniel loses just Lindsay Wilson at the top of the lineup. Emily Peoples (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Missy Black (Atglen, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) will likely be the top two runners with Becky Kaler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) opening the season as the third member of the front trifecta.
For both teams, the key will be staying healthy and peaking at the right time – as it always is. However, to see marked improvement at the end of the season, much will be depend on the performance of the rookies.
