Lending a helping hand

On September 25, the Green Terrror men’s and women’s cross country teams lent a helping hand at the 29th Annual Bachman Valley Half Marathon, held each year in honor of Dr. David Herlocker.

Dr. Herlocker was a professor in the chemistry department at McDaniel College. He served as the department chair for many years and retired in 2006, at which time he earned faculty emerita status.

Dr. Herlocker began running in the mid-70s and was a member and president of the Westminster Road Runner Club. He was an organizer of almost all road races in and around Westminster, including the Main Street Mile. After an accident in 1995 left him unable to run, he continued to walk daily with friends. He hardly ever missed a race and was always volunteering and helping the community.

In Green Terror spirit, the cross country team showed up to man the first water/aid station on the course. They cheered and helped thirsty runners complete the 13.1-mile course that traversed some very challenging terrain.

Dr. Herlocker may no longer be with us, but his enthusiasm for volunteering and giving back to the sport and McDaniel community is still shows strong through these Green Terror athletes.
