McDaniel places 101 student-athletes on Dean’s List, five on Green and Gold Honor Roll

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College has announced its Dean’s List from the Fall 2011 semester and 101 Green Terror student-athletes, including 30 first-semester students, qualified for the honors.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.50 for the semester. A GPA of 3.5-3.699 earns a student Honors according to the College. A GPA of 3.7-3.899 earns a student High Honors while a GPA of 3.9 or above qualifies for Highest Honors.

McDaniel also honors student-athletes through the establishment of the Green and Gold Honor Roll, which was introduced in last year through a joint initiative of the athletics department, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and President’s Office.

To be named to the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must be named to the Dean’s List in the same semester in which he or she has also been named to an athletic honor of All-Centennial Conference (CC) or higher.

Five Green Terror student-athletes have earned the department’s honor in the second fall semester of its existence.

Senior Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River), a defender on the field hockey team, earned honorable mention honors on the field and High Honors in the classroom in the fall. An exercise science and physical education major, she started all 18 games and contributed one goal and one assist. She also had one defensive save.

Senior Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown), a tight end on the football team, earned second-team All-CC honors on the field and Honors in the classroom last fall. A graphic design major, he caught 27 passes for 498 yards – both of which ranked second on the team. He also had three touchdown grabs. He was also selected to play in the All-America Bowl for senior all-stars.

Freshman Kristin Hart (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley), a defender on the women’s soccer team, earned honorable mention honors on the field and Honors in the classroom in the fall. An exercise science and physical education major, she started 14 of the 15 games in which she appeared as a rookie. She was a key member of a defensive unit that turned in a 2.60 goal-against average but held an opponent to one or fewer goals on six occasions. Hart is the first freshman in the three-semester history of the program to earn Green and Gold Honor Roll status.

Junior Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), a midfielder on the field hockey team, earned first-team All-CC honors on the field and Honors in the classroom last fall. An exercise science and physical education major, she started all 18 games and ranked third on the squad with four goals and 11 points. Her three assists was tied for second. She also tied for the team lead with five defensive saves. She was also named second-team All-South region. It is the third time Messersmith has earned the honor.

A computer graphics major, he led the team and conference with 1,401 yards rushing. His 140.1 yards per game on the ground was nearly 33 yards a game better than any other back in the league. He carried the ball a CC-high 254 times and found the end zone 11 times on the ground. He had seven 100-yard rushing games, including a program record-tying 311 against Moravian on Sept. 10. Rollins also caught 12 passes out of the backfield for 63 yards and returned 11 kickoffs for 280 yards, including a program-record 90-yarder in the opener against Catholic.
