WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings and held on for a 7-4 victory over Penn State-Berks in non-conference baseball action on Thursday.
Michael Gallagher (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) led the Green Terror (6-8) with one of three two-hit outings. He also added an RBI and run scored.
Tyler Comport had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Lions (3-6), who had the tying run at the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings.
Trailing 2-0 after the first four Penn State-Berks batters reached that included a Comport two-run single to center, Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) led off the home first with a single.
After a Gallagher single, Rosanova stole third to put runners at the corners. An error scored Rosanova and put runners at first and second.
After a sacrifice moved the runners up, Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) singled home Gallagher to tie the game.
A Chris Morris (Wynnewood, Pa./Harriton) double down the left-field line gave McDaniel a 4-2 lead.
Eric Grantland (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) led off the third with a triple to the gap before scoring on a Kasey Nelson (St. Pete Beach, Fla./St. Michaels [Md.]) single through the left side.
A two-out walk coupled with a throwing error stretched the lead to 6-2.
A two-base error, stolen base and Gallagher RBI groundout made it a 7-2 game in the fourth.
In the sixth, Comport led off with a single before a wild pitch and back-to-back ground outs allowed him to score.
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a double play in the seventh, Zach Reis tripled with one out in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly.
Brad Thaxton (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha) pitched six innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win.
Valori and Tim Griest (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) joined Gallagher with two hits.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Penn State-York on Monday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
