Rickels tallies three

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – McDaniel built a 7-3 halftime lead and held on to defeat Virginia Wesleyan 7-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) led the Green Terror (2-2) with three goals while JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) added a goal and two assists.

Adam Nycz led the Marlins (2-2) with two goals and an assist.

Andrew Mummert (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) staked McDaniel to an early 1-0 lead, scoring off a Duke fee just 1:58 into the game.

Michael Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) doubled the advantage 50 seconds later before Duke made it a 3-0 lead before 3:41 had elapsed.

Ian Shankland broke up the shutout with 10:23 on the clock before a Duke-to-Rickels combination stretched the lead back to four with 5:41 to play in the first quarter.

Travis Puls finished a Nycz assist for a man-up tally with 13:40 remaining in the second quarter before the Green Terror reeled off three straight markers.

Skippy Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) found Ben Yancheski (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) with 5:53 on the clock before Rickels stretched the lead to 6-2 just 28 seconds later.

Rickels pushed the lead to 7-2 with 2:21 to play in the quarter before Nycz closed the deficit to four at the break, scoring with 1:06 on the clock.

Nycz started a three-goal third quarter for Viginia Wesleyan with an unassisted marker at the 10:16 mark.

Mikey Connors finished a solo run with 2:04 remaining before Joe Papetti tallied unassisted with 32 seconds showing to draw the Marlins within one but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final quarter.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 34-25 advantage in shots while McDaniel won 10 of the 17 faceoffs.

The Green Terror returns to action at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
