Zamostny breaks record in 1,000

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Jake Zamostny (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) broke his own program record in the 1,000 to lead McDaniel at Navy in men's indoor track and field action on Saturday.

The Green Terror finished fourth at the five-team meet with 27 points but defeated the only other Division III team in the field, Catholic, by 13 points. Navy finished with 256 points to win by 150 points over UMBC. Delaware State rounded out the quintet with 74 points.

Zamostny finished sixth in the 1,000 with a time of 2:35.39 to top his previous record by nearly two seconds.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) also turned in a personal-best time, finishing fifth in the mile with a Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying time of 4:30.71 to move into fifth place on the program's all-time list.

Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) joined Merkel on the top-10 list in the mile with a CC-qualifying time of 4:41.93 to move into 10th place all-time.

Loi Nguyen (Crofton, Md./South River), Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) and Connor Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana) rounded out the conference-qualifying marks on the day.

Nguyen finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.07 meters while Dunn was fourth in the shot put with a hurl of 12.61 meters. Heavner finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 11.84 meters.

Nguyen was also sixth in the long jump (5.39 meters) while Dunn was eighth (4.73).

Chris Jones (Centreville, Md./Centreville) and Jason Stein (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooton) finished seventh (2:50.09) and eighth (3:17.10) in the 1,000, respectively.

Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was 11th in the mile with a time of 5:00.31 while Keegan Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) finished 10th in the 3,000 with a time of 10:48.50.

Merkel, Zamostny, Heilman and Ball combined to turn in a time of 8:43.58 in the 4x800-meter relay and finish third.

Alex Murchison (Edgewood, Md./St. John's Prep) finished sixth in the shot put (11.17 meters).

The Green Terror returns to action at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 1.
