Butler notches five qualifiers

FAIRFAX, Va. – Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) made his outdoor track and field debut with five Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying marks to lead McDaniel at the George Mason Opener on Saturday.

The Green Terror took just six athletes to the non-scoring meet and recorded a total of 14 qualfiying marks.

In addition to Butler's 5-for-5 day, Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) qualified in all four events in which she participated and Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) went 2-for-3.

Butler finished second in the javelin, tossing a throw of 44.12 meters. He was fourth in both the shot put (12.16) and high jump (1.80). He added a sixth-place showing in the long jump, reaching 5.38 meters in his only legal jump of the day. Butler rounded out his day with an eighth-place showing in the discus (33.99 meters).

Nichols was second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.29 seconds while his other qualifier came in pole vault, where he finished sixth with a height of 3.70. He was also fifth in the javelin with a throw of 35.89 meters but just missed the CC mark.

Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) hit the conference qualifier in the javelin with a toss of 43.30 meters. He was also sixth in the shot put (11.17) and 10th in the discus (29.39).

Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) reached CC marks in the shot put (11.94) and discus (35.79), finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.

Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) rounded out the competitors, crossing ninth in the 1,500 (4:22.04) and 13th in the 3,000 (10:00.46).

On the women's side, Corson was the lone Green Terror competitor. Her best finish came in the 100 hurdles, where she was fourth in a time of 19.05 seconds. She added a pair of fifth-place showings, crossing fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:02.70 and placing fifth in the long jump (4.67 meters). She was sixth in the 200 with a time of 27.96 seconds.

The Green Terror returns to action at the Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater on Saturday.
