Green Terror comes from behind to down Swarthmore, 71-66

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) finished with 18 points, including hitting three free throws in the final minute, to lead McDaniel to a 71-66 win at Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) added 15 points for the Green Terror (15-4, 13-2 CC), who finished with 20 offensive rebounds and clinched a berth in the CC tournament for the ninth consecutive season.

Kathryn Stockbower led the Garnet (9-11, 6-9 CC) with 19 points and nine rebounds, failing to record a double-double for the first time in 12 games.

After a single Ross free throw with 2:31 on the clock evened the game, Moreland sank a trey from the top of the arc with 1:54 on the clock for a 67-64 lead.

The Garnet missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity with 43.0 to play before Fischer went to line and sank the second of two attempts with 32.1 seconds on the clock to stretch the lead to four.

Inbounding with 15.8 seconds, Bodur put back her own miss with 7.3 seconds showing to slice the deficit in half.

With 6.6 seconds, Fischer hit both of her attempts from the line to make it a two-possession game once again.

After a turnover at midcourt with 3.4 seconds showing, Moreland was fouled with 0.6 seconds and hit one to finish the night three points shy of 1,000 for her career.

A Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) gave McDaniel an 11-6 lead with 15:15 to play in the first half before Madeline Ross basket-and-foul play at the 11:23 mark keyed a 10-0 burst that gave the hosts a 16-11 lead with 10:35 showing.

A Thompson layup snapped a 6-minute, 7-second drought and momentarily halted the Garnet run but for straight points stretched the lead to seven for the first time.

A Ceylan Bodur 3-pointer pushed the lead to as many as eight with 2:32 showing before the Green Terror reeled off the eight of the half's final 10 points to pull with 34-32 at the break.

Four straight points from Bodur out of the second-half gate stretched the lead to 38-32 before back-to-back fast-break buckets from Fischer and two Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) evened the game with 17:26 showing.

An Eliza Polli jumper with a foot on the line halted the 10-0 McDaniel run with 15:33 on the clock before Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) countered with a 15-foot baseline jumper.

Two Stockbower free throws with 14:12 to play evened the game at 44-all.

After two Thompson free throws and a Moreland layup gave the Green Terror a 56-52 lead, Genny Pezzola converted a four-point play with 7:30 on the clock to tie the game once again.

Trailing 61-59 on a Stockbower third-chance layup, Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) canned a triple from the right corner to give the visitors a one-point advantage with 4:33 on the clock.

After Mills forced a jump ball on the ensuing Garnet possession, Thompson hit a layup to give the Green Terror a three-point lead.

A Stockbower jumper in the lane cut the lead to 64-63 with 3:51 on the clock.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
